« Graduation Day | Main | Blowing Garfield » The Other Side of Michael MooreMichael Moore's big win at Cannes invites scrutiny – this article by Andrew Anthony of The Observer suggests that Moore, as he says himself, "deeply flawed." [Link] What I think, after my short time in his company, is that Moore is a man you would not want as an opponent, but also one you'd think twice about calling a friend. Though a talented film-maker and a clever showman, a populist who knows how to play the maverick, he is too often both big-headed and small-minded. In his desire to be seen as the decent man telling truth to power, he is too ready to blame those less powerful than himself for his shortcomings. He was justly revered in the Palais, but out on the street no one had a kind word to say about him. At Cannes, Moore may have been the star but he was not, it seems, the man of the people. jon posted this at 12:51 PM |

I think that perhaps some of Moore's supporters have already subjected him to this level of scrutiny. I would imagine that many don't see him as the ideal messenger, or even necessarily agree with all parts of his message. Nevertheless, he enjoys de facto support from a lot of left-wingers simply for sharing his views. You don't get a lot of dissent through the mass media, so maybe the thinking goes that any sources are to be encouraged.

Right, though he's also supported because he's very good at what he does.

Jon, old buddy, I can't count the number of times I've had the same impression when I've happened to meet famous people who are working for a good cause, and whose work I admire. It's happened so often that I'm actually quite surprised when I meet a star like this who seems genuinely humble, and interested in the people around them, and not just in how those people fit into their "trip." I don't think Moore's shortcomings are any worse than the average, and it seems to me that the deeper reason is that we live in a world where it's rare for any voices to be heard except those which have been amplified by single-minded ambition and ego-identification.We can and do admire people like Moore, even if they are egotistical, for putting their egomania to the service of the common good... but that shouldn't stop us from aspiring to something more evolved and more spiritual than this old, old model....
